Knitting With Beads with Florence Spurling

An introductory class to bead knitting that explores the most popular methods of incorporating this form of embellishment to your knits.
Key techniques demonstrated in this class include adding beads through stockinette, reverse stockinette, garter stitch, slip stitch and using a crochet hook. Adding beads through surface embroidery will also be discussed, and we will explore different stitch patterns in which beads can be integrated.
You will be shown a variety of beaded fabrics and work through key methods resulting in a knitted sampler.
Pre-requisites: Knit, Purl, Casting on and off
Materials to bring:
• Fingering/sock weight yarn + corresponding needles
• Size 6/0 beads
• Sewing/tapestry needle that can pass easily through the bead hole
• Small spool of sewing thread
• Crochet hook that can pass easily through the bead hole
No homework, but there will be a handout.
British textile designer Florence Spurling specialises in hand crafted and embellished textiles. In addition to designing, Florence teaches a wide range of textile and knitwear classes. She has experience teaching at university level within the Fashion Design programs at Parsons The New School, Pratt Institute and Moore College of Art and Design. In addition, she instructs at the Textile Arts Center, Vogue Knitting Live.
